Hope in the Darkness: MUtizens Keep Fighting in Crywolf Fortress
Written by Xandamere
The recent Cry Wolf expansion added a lot of new content to Global MU Online, including one very important event, the siege of Crywolf Fortress. Situated in the Valley of Loren, the stronghold occupies a crucial defensive position. More importantly, Crywolf represents a direct threat to Kundun's power: if it stands strong, Kundun loses his ability to regenerate life during combat, making him far more vulnerable to direct attack. As Kundun has never been defeated in the history of Global MU Online, this represents an excellent opportunity for players, and I've seen a lot of excitement surrounding this event. Trust me, you don't want to wait to experience the siege of Crywolf Fortress!
However, holding Crywolf Fortress will be no walk in the park. Kundun has dispatched Balgass, one of his chief minions, to take it. Balgass is in command of a potent force which includes mighty siege weapons, legions of Soram warriors, and 12 Dark Elf lieutenants. Their target is the giant wolf statue in the center of the fortress; this statue's magic is what threatens Kundun. To prevail, players must defend the wolf statue by using 5 altars to create a shield around the statue. As they defend the statue, the players also have to defeat Balgass and his Dark Elves.
I was able to watch the event on May 14th, on the Helheim server. As Balgass' forces entered the Valley of Loren, elves contracted with the altars in order to conjure a shield around the wolf statue. A large alliance of players from many different guilds took up positions around the fortress, ready to defend the elves and repel the assault. Balgass' dark army marched down the valley, spreading out to attack Crywolf Fortress from all sides as the MUtizens moved to meet them.
The forces clashed, and the initial skirmish saw the brave MUtizens pushed back to the gates of Crywolf itself. Bolstered by the power of Balgass and riled into a frenzy by the Dark Elf lieutenants, the diabolical army seemed unstoppable. Scattered Soram warriors broke through the defensive lines and the elves channeling power into the shield quickly came under attack as fiery ballista bolts rained down from overhead.
The situation stabilized momentarily as the players struck down one of the Dark Elves, causing a break in the onslaught and allowing them a moment to regroup. Buoyed by their victory, the MUtizens gathered in the fortress itself and prepared to repulse the next attack, eagerly eyeing the rest of the Dark Elves.
But it was not to be. Balgass himself entered the fray, reaping destruction wherever he swung his mighty axe. The players retreated before his fury, and several elves were struck down at their altars. The players did manage to maintain a contract with at least one altar for the duration of the event, but never again were the Dark Elves or Balgass himself threatened. Crywolf would fall, and Kundun's power would remain unrestrained.
In this defeat, though, there was promise. This day marked the first time an elf remained at an altar when the event ended, and that coupled with the slaying of a Dark Elf showed that the forces of MU were gradually gaining the strength and learning the tactics needed to defeat Balgass' army. The battle also has significant experience awards for those players who do well, and I saw many players level up during the event. The forces of Kundun and Balgass may have won this day, but it seemed clear to me that there was promise and potential in the lands of MU. Soon, I wager, there will be enough power to defeat Balgass and eventually challenge Kundun. The successful defense of Crywolf Fortress will be crucial to defeating Kundun, and I look forward to seeing that long-awaited battle take place.
