Our First Roundtable: WTH is with Gamer Sites?

Written by Xandamere

Welcome to the Roundtable! This will be a regular feature on Gamer Scene, and its purpose is to start conversations. We don't want to just tell you what we think about gaming issues; we want to hear what YOU think.

I used to read all of the 'big' gaming sites when I was younger and the Internet was new (yes, I'm that old). I used to love seeing all the news about upcoming titles, screenshots and video clips and all that. But somewhere along the line, I stopped reading those sites. They just became boring.

Why, though? Why do these gaming sites I used to check daily no longer hold my interest? Back in the day, just the idea that I could go to a site to read about new games seemed awesome. Now, it feels like every gaming website is just a clone of every other, and all they do is spout off about this new game or that new platform. They say very little I actually care about. I'd rather talk about new games with other players than read a news media briefing. The internet has moved beyond being a vehicle for transmitting information and become a vehicle for connecting people and creating communities. It feels like gaming sites haven't evolved with this change; thus they seem boring now.

Most of the major gaming sites have struggled to define themselves from one another and stay relevant by making flashier sites. More graphics, more animations, but less actual content. Personally, I don't care about the fancy pictures and scrolling flash bar on a main page; what I want out of a gaming site is a place to meet my fellow gamers and discuss gaming with them.

But maybe I'm way off, maybe I'm just too much of a communityophile (yes, I made that word up). What do you all think? Are gamer sites lackluster? And if so, in what ways? How could they better serve and interest the gaming community? Don't forget! This is a roundtable article, which means we want to hear back from our community. Send us your responses, and we'll expand this article with what you have to say.

Tell us what you think!
